Smart Karate - Honolulu
1259 S Beretania St, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96814, United States
As a former martial arts instructor myself, I am overly critical of any martial arts program. Smart Karate has all the elements that are key in a well balanced martial arts program for any age. I have a 3 year old who just loves coming to class. In addtition to the usual mix of martial arts training (kicks, hand strikes, self defense, etc.), are important lessons taught in class about discipline, attitude, perserverence, compassion, integrity, life skills and values. All important to building a strong foundation for your little one for the many challenges and opportunities that life's journey brings to each of us. Each instructor at Smart Karate brings their own unique experience to the program. I highly recommend this program from preschooler to any age! It is a top notch program! A++++++

I spent 9 weeks in Hawaii last year, and the highlight of my trip was finding Au's Shaolin Arts Society. I took Chi Kung classes twice a week for the entire stay. The classes exceeded my expectations, and Chi Kung has now become a part of my life.
Sifu Au and Sifu Scott were informative and great teachers. There are DVD's available to learn Chi Kung from Sifu Au. He explains the origins of Chi Kung, and takes you through the entire work out. The discs are very easy to follow, and very informative.
I cannot recommend the classes or the instructors enough. Do yourself a favor, and go take a few classes when you are in Honolulu. You won't regret it.
As Sifu Au says, "Breath is life." Make the most of it.

I do muay thai and the coaches are awesome. The prices are a little high but it's very much worth it.

Went to visit GBU due to a promo and wasn't sure what to expect. Met Gavin and Professor Elias who were very welcoming and friendly. After a bit of small conversation they invited me to hangout, watch the current class or join them if I choose to do so.
Decided to give it a go in the fundamental class and was glad I did. Professor was very patient in his instruction and quite detailed, which is vital when you are beginning or continuing to learn or reinforcing what you already know. After the class we sat down to talk and he went over the various programs they offered and their rates to give me an idea what it would be like should I decide to train with them. Even though I chose to utilize the promo they had going on, neither he nor Gavin made me feel as if I were compelled to stay with them, and only would have me to do so if it felt right for my situation.
This is my 3rd week going and I can say that the classes are very friendly, with no egos getting in the way of learning, and both Professor Elias and Gavin have been consistent in their teaching and sharing of knowledge with the same passion and degree of details from that first day entering their school. So far everyone has been great too. With women, children and adults, they offer programs to meet all degrees of experience and an environment that is fun for everyone.
One of the attributes that I've come to recognize in the short time I have been training there is the family-oriented atmosphere. Each week they have posted different activities for their members, family and friends for upcoming months. Movie night, a Bar-B-Q in a couple of weeks, or other events that bind the group and fosters growth among each other. There may be other academies that do this, although I am not sure if there are, but you can be assured that if you train here this is what you can expect all the time.
